Beyşehir city walls and Kale Kapısı

Surviving fragments of Beyşehir’s medieval defences include the gate known as Kale Kapısı.

The defended town

The municipal heritage book attributes fortification work to Eşrefoğlu Süleyman Bey and offers an approximate late thirteenth-century date for the gate. It describes an arch of alternating light and dark stones, with traces of flanking defensive towers. The surviving gate is evidence for the boundary of the beylik town, although much of the wall circuit has disappeared.[1]

TDV also lists the castle among the structures repaired by Süleyman Bey. The difference between building anew and repairing older fabric matters here: the surviving structure cannot automatically date every wall on the former circuit to his reign.[2]

Within the urban landscape

The defences framed the İçerişehir ensemble of worship, learning and exchange. As Beyşehir expanded, the gate became a fragment within a larger town; its position helps locate the medieval core even where the walls no longer stand.[3][4]

Dates written on the gate

The gate inscription is unusually precise evidence for the city’s defences. Muşmal transcribes it as naming Eşrefoğlu Seyfeddin Süleyman and the reign of Seljuk Sultan Mesud, and dates the construction to 1290. It shows the wall was a political as well as a practical project: Süleyman used a formal title while presenting the work under the Seljuk sovereign. This is firmer evidence for a building phase than stylistic resemblance alone.[5]

Two later inscriptions record repair rather than first construction. The chapter places one intervention in 1545, associated with local mobilisation under Süleyman I, and another in 1605 under Ahmed I. The three dates must not be merged: an inscription on the surviving north gate does not prove every part of the lost wall circuit was rebuilt at the same time.[6]

Walls and the changing town

Medieval Beyşehir had the lake along one side of İçerişehir and fortifications on the others. Muşmal describes the northern entrance, traces of projecting towers and arrow slits; much of the wall has vanished. The defended quarter contained the mosque, market, bath and homes of a working beylik centre. A gate is therefore evidence for an entire urban arrangement, although its surviving stonework represents only a fraction of it.[7][8]

After the castle lost military and administrative importance, trade and government shifted toward Dışarışehir across the watercourse. Muşmal traces this through later shops, neighbourhoods and public buildings. The gate consequently marks the old core, while the broader town expanded beyond it. Stories of tunnels and a moat appear in local accounts, but their precise extent remains less secure than the dated masonry inscriptions.[9]
