An emir in the urban record

The medrese near Eşrefoğlu Mosque is linked in local accounts with İsmail Ağa’s repair or patronage. Research on Arabic and Persian inscribed cenotaphs from his period provides a closer record of names, commemoration and the multilingual elite environment.[1][2]

The evidence concerns a later phase of the medieval core, after the first Eşrefoğlu construction. It is more precise to distinguish building, repair and commemoration than to assign every nearby structure to one patron.[2][3]

Local names

Names such as İsmail Ağa Medresesi and associated tomb traditions kept the emir’s memory visible. They should be compared with inscriptions and architectural study because names can survive after a building changes function or fabric.[2]

Power after the Eşrefoğulları

Kunt, Muşmal and Çetinaslan identify İsmail Ağa as Halil Ağa’s son, an emir in Beyşehir after the Eşrefoğlu dynasty. Their reconstruction places Karamanoğlu Musa Bey in control in 1328 while İsmail Ağa remained a local officer. Following the death of Ilkhanid ruler Abū Saʿīd in 1335, they describe him acting with greater independence in the basin until his death in 1379. This is a scholar’s reconstruction of changing overlordship, not evidence for a modern independent state.[4]

The study names Emînüddevle and Seydî Ahmed as sons. It notes that information about their lives is uneven; Emînüddevle appears as a later local emir, whereas Seydî Ahmed is especially visible through a dated cenotaph. Family inscriptions thus supplement the political narrative without filling every gap in the succession.[5]

School, lodges and bridges

The Arabic inscription of Taş Medrese is cited for a 1369–70 building phase under İsmail Ağa. The same researchers record his patronage of the Çilledar Sultan, Kalenderhane and Afşar Bey lodges, with endowments assigned to them. Most of those lodges no longer stand, whereas parts of the school, his tomb and works in outlying settlements preserve his name.[6]

The municipal guide gives another version of the medrese’s first phase, attributing it to Eşrefoğlu Süleyman and describing İsmail Ağa’s role as a repair. The inscription, local tradition and building fabric are different evidence; the article on the medrese sets out their disagreement instead of assigning the whole structure an unqualified date.[7][8]

The five cenotaphs

The 2014 catalogue examines five cenotaphs dated to his era: two then in Vuslat Park, two on Sevgi Island and one in the Emir Tomb at the Eşrefoğlu complex. Names and death dates appear in Arabic on the ends, while the side inscriptions are Persian. Two are securely traced to the lost Çilledar Sultan lodge; the proposed provenance of the other three remains less certain.[9]
