Irrigation and construction
The regulator was built as part of the Konya plain irrigation project, with the wider construction period recorded as 1908–14. Unlike an ordinary road bridge, it combined a crossing with gates intended to control the flow of water out of Lake Beyşehir. Hüseyin Muşmal’s study places the work within late Ottoman engineering and local debate.[1]
The structure’s role was regional: water management at Beyşehir affected land and agriculture farther east. Its history belongs to the same period as the destructive 1910–11 floods, but the floods and the completion of the regulator are separate events.[1][2]

A new waterfront
The bridge became a familiar part of the modern townscape. It is evidence of a change in how the lake was governed, not merely a picturesque historic span. Reading it with accounts of older neighbourhoods shows how twentieth-century public works altered the edge of a medieval town.[1][3]
Stone spans and movable gates
Hüseyin Muşmal gives the regulator a length of 42 metres and width of 6.35 metres. It has fifteen openings and fourteen masonry piers, with arches above and movable gates in the openings. Cut stone, the roadway and the water-control mechanism all belong to the same structure; a photograph of the arches alone does not explain its purpose.[4]
The works of 1908–14 replaced an older town bridge where Beyşehir Çayı left the lake. Muşmal cites earlier descriptions of that predecessor with about eight to ten openings. The modern Taş Köprü therefore occupies an established crossing, while its gates mark the newer irrigation project.[5]
A protected civic landmark
A decision of the Cultural Heritage Protection High Council, dated 12 July 1980 and numbered A-2280, registered the bridge as a protected cultural asset. After a newer bridge opened, Taş Köprü was closed to vehicle traffic. Its continuing presence records both the old crossing and a major late Ottoman water-management scheme.[4]
