An ancient community
Ancient-geography research places Pappa among the communities of the lake district. The association with modern Yunuslar rests on archaeological and historical interpretation, and the ancient place should not be confused with the medieval town of Beyşehir. Roman and later material from Yunuslar shows the locality’s importance across more than one period.[1][2]
The best-known find is the Herakles sarcophagus, found at Yunuslar in 1958. A notable object helps identify the place’s cultural world, but a tomb by itself cannot describe the whole settlement’s population or economy.[3]
Regional setting
Yunuslar belongs to the network of sites discussed under the ancient basin. Its evidence is best read alongside inscriptions, roads and other settlements rather than by assuming that every ancient name in the district refers to one city.[1]
Names and changing administrative geography
Kurt and Atcı's historical-geography study stresses that the wider lake region moved between ancient administrative descriptions. Pliny wrote of Orondeis as a subdivision of Pisidia; Ptolemy placed it in Galatia; sixth-century Hierokles assigned some towns to Pisidia and others to Lycaonia. These are sources from different times and purposes, not three simultaneous modern borders. Pappa or Tiberiopolis is discussed within that changing geography, while the identification of Yunuslar uses archaeological finds as well as names in texts.[4]
The Roman Herakles sarcophagus came from Yunuslar and is displayed in the Konya Archaeology Museum. The ministry's museum record identifies it as a third-century columned marble sarcophagus of the Sidemara type. A portable funerary object establishes a Roman-period connection with this locality, though it cannot locate every public building of Pappa. Keeping the object's findspot, the proposed town identification and later museum location distinct prevents the ancient settlement from being reduced to a single display piece.[5][6]
