At Kubadabad
The TDV palace article describes Köpek as a court emir, architect and decorator supervising construction at Kubadabad between 1226 and 1236. This is a specific role in a royal commission, not evidence that he alone designed every building or tile in the complex.[1]
His career also belongs to the political history of the Seljuk court after Keykubad I. The TDV biographical article provides the broader account; the palace foundations establish only a portion of the work connected with his name.[2][1]
Sources and attribution
Medieval narrative sources and modern architectural interpretation need to be read together. Naming a supervisor helps explain how the court organized building, while excavation determines the surviving plan and phases. The distinction is important wherever lost structures are reconstructed.[1]
An architect in a contested court
Muharrem Kesik's TDV biography says Köpek's early life and entry into Seljuk service are unknown. It identifies him from a caravanserai inscription as Köpek son of Muhammed, with Sâdeddin as his epithet. Medieval court records call him a hunting emir, painter and architect, and put him in command of part of the army near Harput in 1226. The construction of Kubadabad thus belonged to a wider court career that combined administration, warfare and design.[3]
After Keykubad I died in 1237, Köpek played a leading role in the accession and court politics of Keyhusrev II. Kesik's account describes his elimination of rivals and eventual loss of the sultan's confidence. It places Köpek's killing at Kubadabad, probably in December 1238, and notes disagreement in medieval assessments of him. These events make the palace a setting for political conflict as well as art and leisure. Neither the dramatic court narrative nor his architectural title identifies him as the sole maker of all the buildings and decoration.[4]
