First World War exiles in Beyşehir

Ottoman authorities used Beyşehir as a place of compulsory residence for some foreign nationals during the First World War.

The wartime policy

Hüseyin Muşmal and Hasret Gümüş examine Ottoman archive records on deportation and forced residence of subjects of enemy states. The government selected interior places away from military routes; the study explains why Beyşehir’s setting and climate made it one of the designated districts. These people were caught in wartime state policy, not in a voluntary tourist journey.[1]

The article distinguishes the status of hostile-state nationals from particular allegations of espionage. Those categories should not be merged: an individual’s nationality alone is not evidence of spying. Archival orders, local arrangements and case records are needed to reconstruct each experience.[2]

A different war, a different status

During the Second World War, the Republic of Türkiye held German naval personnel in Beyşehir. That later episode had different legal status, authorities and circumstances. Comparing the two shows the town’s repeated use as an inland place of confinement without treating the episodes as one continuous camp.[2][3]

Scale and lived conditions

Muşmal and Gümüş examined about fifty archival documents and report roughly 250 people sent to Beyşehir for compulsory residence between 1915 and 1918. The count belongs to this specific wartime policy and should not be merged with the German naval internment of 1944–45. The archival trail lets the authors reconstruct residence orders, supervision and petitions.[4]

Conditions varied. The study reports illness and at least one death, even as it interprets official arrangements in a generally favourable light. A factual account should preserve both the hardship visible in the records and the authors’ interpretation as separate things.[5]
